Nomura Islamic Asset Management (“NIAM”) (Company No.: 838564-T) obtained its Islamic fund management license in Jan 2009. NIAM’s setup was in line with our objective to expand the group’s Islamic footprint through branding NIAM as the global hub for Islamic asset management business for the group. Being the global hub for the group’s Islamic asset management business, we always ensure our control procedures are flexible enough to adhere to different Shariah standards preferred by clients of our Shariah compliant investment mandates.
As of 31 March 2019, NIAM manages 2 wholesale funds with a combined NAV of over RM515 million. NIAM’s total assets under management stood at over MYR5.0 billion as at the end of March 2019.

Our Key People
Chief Executive Officer
Mr. Ramlie is currently the chief executive officer of Nomura Islamic Asset Management Sdn Bhd. He has extensive experience in the global capital markets and financial services industry, spanning over 20 years in Singapore and Malaysia, and covering the areas of global sales, advisory services and deal executions of capital market products, listed derivatives products, insurance and risk transfer solutions, and most recently, customized global investment solutions. Prior to joining Nomura Islamic Asset Management Sdn Bhd in May 2015, he was previously at CIMB Group, where he was concurrently CEO & ED of CIMB-Principal Islamic Asset Management; and MD & Head, Institutional & International Sales, CIMB Group Asset Management Division. He was also an Invited Member of the Investment Committee of CIMB-Principal Asset Management; and a Board Member of CIMB Futures and CIMB-Howden Insurance Brokers. Prior to that, Mr. Ramlie was based in Singapore over a period of 10 years and has had stints with Societe Generale, Daiwa and Barings in various capacities. Ramlie holds a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Western Sydney, Australia, and a Graduate Diploma in Financial Management from the Singapore Institute of Management. He has also attended the Wharton Leadership Development Program at The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, and the INSEAD Leadership Program in Fontainebleau, France and Singapore.
Hiew Teck Kong
Head of Malaysian Fixed Income & Global Sukuk
Mr Hiew is currently the head of fixed income of Nomura Islamic Asset Management Sdn Bhd. He has more than 15 years of experience in managing fixed income mandates. Prior to joining Nomura Islamic Asset Management Sdn Bhd, he was the head of fixed income in HLG Asset Management Berhad. During his tenure as a fixed income manager with CIMB-Principal Asset Management Berhad and a fixed income manager with Mayban Investment Management Sdn Bhd from 2000 to 2005, he helped managed institutional and unit trust funds. He spent 3 years in Malaysia Discounts Berhad as senior fixed income dealer. Mr Hiew holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (Finance) from University of Nebraska, USA. He is also a holder of a Capital Markets and Services Representative’s License to carry out Islamic fund management activities.
Wan Nurshafina Wan Mohd Samsudin
Ms Wan Nurshafina joined Nomura Islamic Asset Management Sdn Bhd in October 2014. Prior to joining Nomura Islamic Asset Management Sdn Bhd, Ms Wan Nurshafina practiced as a litigation lawyer at one of the largest law firms in Malaysia for 2 years after completing 9 months of pupillage at the same firm. During her practicing years, Ms Wan Nurshafina assisted in and handled cases relating to corporate and commercial disputes, bankruptcy and corporate insolvency. Ms Wan Nurshafina holds a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) from University of Malaya and was admitted as an Advocate & Solicitor of High Court of Malaya in July 2012.
The Investment Committee assists in the establishment of investment strategies for the management of unit trust funds and reviews investments undertaken by the firm’s fund manager’s in the course of managing unit trust funds. Committee meetings are convened at least 4 times a year.
Mr. Leslie brings with him over 20 years of industry experience in the area of funds management and research coverage. He was managing Malaysian equities fund for a local insurance company prior to relocating to a research house in Shanghai where he expanded his research coverage to include Hong Kong and Chinese companies. Currently, Mr Leslie is Head of Investments at Nomura Asset Management Malaysia Sdn Bhd (“NAMM”) and has been with NAMM since December 2007. Leslie holds a Bachelor of Engineering in Manufacturing and Operations Management from the University of Nottingham in United Kingdom. Mr. Leslie also holds a Capital Markets Services Representative License.
Dato’ Wan Kamaruzaman bin Wan Ahmad
Dato’ Wan Kamaruzaman joined the firm as independent director on 1 March 2019 and brings with him 30 years working experience in the financial industry. Dato’ Wan Kamaruzaman started his career with Malayan Banking Berhad in 1981 the Treasury Department before joining Affin Moneybrokers Sdn Bhd in 1994 as its CEO. During his tenure with Affin Group, Dato’ Wan Kamaruzaman was made CEO of various entities up until his departure in 2005. Thereafter, Dato’ Wan Kamaruzaman briefly served as finance director for Izoma (M) Sdn Bhd and Kemuncak Facilities Management Sdn Bhd, before joining the Employees Provident Fund (“EPF”) in Sep 2007 as General Manager of its Treasury Department. Prior to his retirement in November 2018, Dato’ Wan Kamaruzaman was CEO of Kumpulan Wang Persaraan (Diperbadankan) (“KWAP”), a position he held since May 2013. Dato’ Wan Kamaruzaman holds a Bachelor of Economics (Analytical Economic) Hons. from the University of Malaya.
Mr Johari bin Abdul Muid
Mr Johari joined the firm as an independent director on 1 November 2014 and brings with him over 30 years working experience in the financial industry. Mr Johari started out his career as a money market dealer with CIMB Investment Bank before joining CIMB Securities to work in the area of institutional sales. After 20 years with CIMB Group, Mr Johari joined ValueCap Sdn Bhd as Chief Investment Officer and thereafter the Employees Provident Fund as Chief Investment Officer Equity. Prior to leaving EPF, Mr Johari held the position of Deputy CEO – Pension Policy and Corporate Planning. After leaving EPF, Mr Johari joined RHB Bank Berhad CEO and Managing Director before retiring in 2013. Mr Johari is a member of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants in the United Kingdom.
